Invest in your career and build a professional legacy…

This is a new role, the first in the country of its kind; a Head of Investments across two local government pension funds. Building on our already successful partnership and strong working relationship, realising the synergies and the opportunities of our joint working.

“We are proud of the respective track records that the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire pension investments have achieved, they have been recognised nationally for their success. As we progress with asset pooling, we are seeking to maintain this success whilst preserving the long-term stability of our respective pension funds. I am looking forward to recruiting a new Head of Investments that will further develop our thinking and realise our ambition.”
Julian Neilson
Head of Finance East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

“Despite our track record, we are not complacent, we are ambitious in our approach to adopt modern methods to pension investments that yield return, always mindful of the privilege we hold in managing our pension assets. In my role as President of the County Treasurers Society I am excited to realise the benefits of this new approach, confident that it will be a model that others will want to follow”.
Gary Fielding
Corporate Director Strategic Resources, North Yorkshire County Council and President of County Treasurers Society.

The East Riding and North Yorkshire Pension Funds are two of the most highly performing local authority pension funds in the country. Investment returns have been exceptional and the funding level of both funds is therefore well above 100% in both cases. Total investments are valued at £9.1bn and the fund strategies are intended to maintain this healthy position. Together, the two funds serve circa 500 employers and 209,000 members across the whole of the Humber region, York and North Yorkshire. Both Funds are members of the Border to Coast Pensions Partnership as part of investment pooling arrangements.

The Funds are administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire County Council, who have a track record of good collaboration across a whole range of activities including pensions. We believe there are great synergies in working together under a shared Head of Investments so that the voices and interests of both Funds are well served.

Your success in this role will draw on your considerable pension fund investment management experience across a broad range of asset classes, high level investment analysis and reporting skills, staff leadership, and knowledge and navigation of the Local Government Pension Scheme.

This is not a typical pensions investment role; you will identify when it is best to collaborate between Funds and with Border to Coast, and when there is a need to reflect differences recognising the distinct (but like-minded) stakeholders. We are looking for someone who can be seen as a leading voice amongst Border to Coast partners and can draw upon knowledge and skill to lead discussions on investment strategy as well as managing the investment portfolio.

The role will involve the overall management of the Pension Fund including direct investment management across a range of asset classes, oversight of the existing external investment managers including Border to Coast, strategic and tactical asset allocation, management of investments staff across both Funds, managing the continuing transition of assets to Border to Coast, and reporting to senior management, the Pensions Committees and the Local Pension Boards.

We are strong performing authorities, with stable political leadership, and talented teams providing the platform to have a fulfilling, challenging and successful career in a truly stunning place.

We pride ourselves on being an employer of choice, offering a range of training and development opportunities and career progression allowing you to manage your own development journey and empowering you to control your career. Perhaps most importantly you will be welcomed by talented teams.

We positively encourage productive, flexible working and we provide you with the technology you need to work from a variety of locations. A relocation package is available for eligible applicants which can be discussed upon request.

In addition to your salary we offer a range of great benefits to help you financially make life a bit easier. From career average employer contribution pension scheme, cycle schemes, shopping and gym discounts to name but a few you can find more information on the range of benefits we offer within our rewards brochure.

You will attend key meetings for both Funds and lead staff across both organisations while being a regular attendee at Border to Coast’s offices in Leeds. Given the regional coverage of the role flexibility regarding working arrangements including location is available.

The region provides a beautiful place to live not least due to the outstanding natural beauty, but also due to the varied lifestyle which we can offer you and your family.
