Welcome and thank you for your interest in our post.

North Yorkshire is England's largest county and a beautiful, vibrant place to live and work.

Established in 1993, Yorwaste is the biggest waste management company in North Yorkshire and, working in partnership with it’s sister company SJB Recycling, is the UK’s largest independent, green waste, composter. Employing over 300 staff we manage over half a million tonnes of waste and carry out around 450,000 collections every year. Our guiding principal is to provide customers with sustainable, innovative and economical waste management solutions.

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. We serve approximately 850,000 residents from North Yorkshire and York. Every week around 28,000 people visit one of our 22 House Waste Recycling Centres and with a fleet of over 60 HGV’s we service over 2,500 commercial businesses. Some of our key clients include Betty’s tea rooms, York Teaching Hospital, RSPCA, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, York Racecourse, University of York and the Grand Hotel and Spa, York. We take pride in listening to our customers to help us drive our organisation forward.

The Group is currently in a strong financial position with an annual turnover of over £40 million and secured contracts worth £200 million over the next ten years. The last three years has seen the Group undergo a significant transformation, arresting a long-term decline, delivering a 53% increase in EBITDA and creating over £2.4m of shareholder value in 2016/17. This provides an excellent foundation and stepping stone for the next Managing Director to drive our company forward. We have by no means reached a plateau and continue to be ambitious and grow, with a target of the Group generating £5m of annualised, shareholder value by 2018/19.

In addition to our strong financial performance, we have a number of strengths for the new managing director to build upon.  These include:

  • Access to shareholder capital reserves to support business growth.
  • Long term shareholder contracts.

  • Our Unique Selling Point - the transfer station network in North Yorkshire.

  • A leading trade collection service provider in the Yorkshire region.

  • UK’s largest independent compost producer.

  • Core people with good technical expertise.

  • Strong cash flow generation.

Whilst we are successful we are not complacent; we have just started a new journey ready for you to take us to the next level. We are an ambitious and forward thinking organisation.

Restructured in 2015 to become a “Teckal compliant” company, Yorwaste are owned by North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council. Being Teckal compliant allows our shareholders to award contracts directly without procurement. The main benefit of this arrangement is a long term, ethical and stable business, with great potential for commercial growth. North Yorkshire and York Councils are somewhat different to what some might view as a typical public sector organisations, they are award winning, commercially focussed and each have successful commercial trading hubs in their own right!

The Teckal arrangement places Yorwaste in a unique position to leverage commercial opportunities from the asset base required to provide shareholder services.

To name just a few our future ambitions include:

  • Being a truly customer focused organisation.
  • Growing our commercial collection business.

  • Improving long-term disposal into Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP).

  • Maximising the commercial opportunities from wastes not suitable for AWRP.

  • Growing Yorganics compost sales.

  • Developing greater value from the Group’s landbank.

  • Improving our internal systems and processes.

  • Improving our asset utilisation.

  • Forging strategic partnerships in both public and private sectors to achieve profitable growth.

The Board of Directors are now looking to appoint an ambitious, commercially astute and influential Managing Director to realise these ambitions. To drive change, help define the future direction, influence key stakeholders, deliver service improvement and achieve sustainable business growth.

This role provides a unique opportunity for an up and coming business leader who is looking for their next challenge and to make their mark on the largest waste management organisation in North Yorkshire.

If you think you are up to the challenge we would like to hear from you!
